Organization is key to making a room look pristine.

You may be asking yourself these questions… What does organization look like? What are the key elements in making a room organized? What is the easiest method to organizing a room? The answers are simple!

Organization is what you make it. You are free to make big changes to a room to make it more organized or it can be as simple as labeling shelves, drawers, or bins.

I love going to the store and checking out the newest organization tools. Whether it is a basket, a plastic bin, a scarf hanger or a label maker… I get chills down my spine!

Organization is up to you, but my biggest suggestion is making sure you remember where you put everything. This is why labeling is a great way to know your own room. You could put something in a drawer and never remember where you put it. Label that drawer, so your worries go down the drain.

No matter what type of organization you do, it is sure to make a small impact or a world of difference!

One of my most inspiring Interior Designers is Candice Olson. She has her very own show on HGTV titled “Divine Design”, which features many spaces that are simply in need of some ‘glam’. Candice is a very contemporary designer who specializes in making spaces look “divine”.

It is hard to have a “divine” space, especially as a starving college student, yet Candice makes is simple to create a space that is envied by everyone. Featured below are some of her most famous designs that spark creativity, organization and a splash of color.

By this time, I have no doubt that your dorm room is a complete disaster. Unless you are a tidy, organized and cleanly individual, my assumption is that your dorm room has smells that are lingering from either the sheets of your bed or the dark depths of your room.

Have no fear my friend, the art of cleaning and organization is easier than you may think. Here are my five useful tips on how to clean your dorm room and have fun with it at the same time.

1. Bump the Tunes :: Music always makes daunting tasks go faster. Turn up you iTunes and let the music blast through your cobweb windows. If anything, the bass tones will scare the little creatures hiding in your room away forever. Then you don’t have to deal with them. You can even use the dust pan as your microphone and sing along!

2. Bring on the Treats :: I always find it easier to clean if I have my favorite beverage accompanied by my favorite treat sitting on my desk. Unless your room is infested with layers of dust, cleaning with a bowl of treats sitting next to you makes it go a lot faster. Plus, you’re working off al the calories you’re gaining by cleaning!

3. TV Cures :: If music isn’t your thing, I also enjoy turning on my favorite television show. For example, I like cleaning at 4:00 because I know Oprah will be on to inspire me as I find myself engulfed in a dirty rom. She always knows what to say…

4. Play Dress Up :: This may not be for everyone, but dressing up in funky, psychadelic clothing makes cleaning more entertaining. Yes, you may be the only person who sees your fanciful outfit, but that’s what makes it fun. You can dress in anything you like and no one has to know. I know what you’re thinking… and no, dressing naked is not recommended. What if you are allergic to the cleaning supply you’re using!

5. Colorful Cleaning Supplies :: Cleaning doesn’t have to be drab and boring. You can try shopping at a cheaper store to find fun cleaning supplies. A dust pan that is white and metal is no fun, but if you can find a dust pan that is purple and sparkly, then cleaning will be inspirational! Even if you can’t find something like this, you can always purchase a boring cleaning supply and fancy it up with some glitter and puff paint.

For me, cleaning requires inspiration. Yes, I thoroughly enjoy Interior Design, but cleaning is a completely different story. It takes me a few days to become inspired to clean, but following these tips makes the job so much easier AND more fun!

When designing a college dorm room, you always want functionality to be your priority. Whether it is a room shared by another roommate, a suite where there are more than four or more people living together, or you are by yourself, functionality is always key to creating a livable space.

You may be wondering what the term functionality refers to… let me break it down for you. When referring to interior design, functionality is how you use your space to better convenience your life.

Let’s say you move into your dorm room and the only place to put your bed is in front of a closet that you and your roommate have to share. This is not functional. Instead, you can move your bed in front of a window, so that you are not only using your space to serve a better purpose, but you are creating a space that is more functional.

College dorms are tricky and often times, you move in thinking you have a plan… the moment you show up to see your room, your plans have to change because the room is WAY smaller than you anticipated. It is all about functionality…

The more functional your space, the easier your life will become.

With that said, you may be wondering why Interior Design should be important to you if you’re a college student. The answer to this simple question is this: Studies show that a cleaner, more organized and decorated space at home reduces the stress levels of adolescents and adults.

While in college, budget some money to take care of yourself and your space… your heart may thank you later.

Now you may be wondering where to shop if you’re on a budget; the answer is, once again, a simple one. Take a trip to your local Wal Mart, Target, KMart or even Ross. These retail stores are located in most college towns and can not only save you a bundle, but can help you clean up your space and keep your health strong.

I am almost to the point of being addicted to Target. I go there at least once a week to check out the new styles and sometimes find myself sauntering through the Home Decor aisles. Not only do they have a wide array of frames, pictures, mirrors, lamps and interior organization items, but they tend to have average price ranges for these products.

So, as a college student, you still have the chance to save yourself money while making your space look better, neater and cleaner.
